It’s A Southern Thang! “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”

Hey!  It’s time for another installment of “It’s A Southern Thang!”.  One really can’t write a Southern commentary without mentioning:

Yes, I’m going there……

Let me begin by saying I have a few “guilty pleasure” TV shows.  The absolute worst one I watch?

Toddlers & Tiaras

Yep.  I don’t tell many of my friends that I watch this.  It’s more of a secret guilty pleasure.  Every week I tune in to watch ambitious Pageant Moms push their poor little girls (sometimes boys!) into these ludicrous competitions.  Dropping thousands of dollars trying to win the Ultimate Grand Supreme title.  Smiling into the camera, saying, “Oh, she loves to compete and get all dressed up!”, while the child is in the background having a temper tantrum, screaming, “I don’t want to practice!  I want to play!!!!” with a snotty nose.  Yet I set the DVR.  I think part of my fascination with this show is knowing that a majority of these girls will one day be featured on one of my favorite shows, “Intervention”.  Or something like it ten years down the line.

So when one of the featured contestants on “Toddlers & Tiaras” got a spin-off, of course I was going to watch it!

It just so happened to be Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo (One of Barbara Walters’ “Most Fascinating People” of 2012).  Like boiled peanuts, you either love ‘em or you hate ‘em.

They live in McIntyre, GA.  About two hours from where I live in Augusta.  Just outside of where my husband grew up in Cochran.  What you see on the show – gnats, heat and humidity, mosquitoes, incessant sneezing (from the annoying pollen; but, they could use some decorum) is ever present in our state.  No Hollywood smoke and mirrors there!  On a recent episode, I saw the family was actually here in Augusta, at Adventure Crossing (an arcade of sorts), racing go-carts!  If I would have known my friends, I would have been there for a photo op to share with y’all!!!

Their accents are real.  I think the sub-titles on the show are a bit unnecessary.  I have no problem understanding what they’re saying, but perhaps if you’re not Southern, you need a written translation (?). Unlike Paula Deen who, I feel, exploits her “Southern-ness”.  Don’t get me wrong. She cooks Southern on her shows, and her restaurant “The Lady and Sons” in Savannah is still one of the best bona fide Southern dining places around.  But “y’all” is pronounced in one syllable. She stretches it out into three syllables – ye-AWW-LLL.  I think she plays up her accent for the viewers.

What I find refreshing about “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” is that they are genuine.  I just don’t think they are sophisticated enough to “play up” for the cameras that are filming their day-to-day lives.  What you see is what you get.  You have the other reality shows featuring super affluent families, living in mansions.  They are unhappy, with constant drama all around.  Fighting, back-stabbing, overturning dinner tables, throwing cocktails into people’s faces.  The ultimate in dysfunction, wrapped up in Tiffany blue and Chanel.  With someone wearing a pair of shoes that costs almost what the Honey Boo Boo’s live on for a year.  Even with whatever TLC is paying them.

At the end of the day, they are a family.  They accept one another.  What they lack in finesse, they make up for with love.  I don’t care if you live in the Midwest or the Northeast.  Or outside of the US. Family is Family.  And no family is perfect.  At least they are all happy – you don’t see them scrapping on the show.  Sans the Tiffany blue and Chanel.  Yes, Mama never married her baby daddys.  Yes, one of her daughters had a baby out of wedlock.  Last I checked, that is the norm in Hollywood.  Why should it be looked down upon in south Georgia?

They are not a family of means, but they give back to their community.  Every year, they do a “Christmas in July” fundraiser to help those less fortunate.  They decorate their house with lights (as seen on the show), and encourage neighbors to bring canned food donations to help those in need.  One of our friends happened to be driving through McIntyre around the holiday season, and stopped by the Honey Boo Boo house.  They were indeed preparing for their annual charity drive.  Our friends parked their car, walked up to the house, and got to meet the family.  Actually got to get some pictures with them.  I will update this post once I get permission from said friends to share their pics.

As an aside to my non-Southern readers:  we do not allow pet pigs (for those that have them) free reign in our house.  Much less use the potty on our family dining table.  And if we have birds (roosters, doves *in my case!*), they don’t live in the house with us.

And don’t finger point with burping and farting.  You know you do it in your family (at least your husbands do!!).  You just don’t have a film crew in your face, documenting it for all the world to see.  That is not strictly a Southern Thang!

I’m just sayin’, I’d rather watch a Southern family, warts and all, than an affluent pseudo-celeb family, covering up said warts with plastic surgery.  Warts is warts :)

***DISCLAIMER*** I am so terrified of copyright laws, I made up my own logos for the TV shows on this post.  If I get locked up, will one of you do a bake sale/telethon for me???  Or ask the Honey Boo Boos to make the next Christmas fundraiser a “Break KP Out of Jail” fundraiser??

Thanks for reading!!!  kxoxo

I miss the south so much!! You are right, as a Texas gal ya’ll is pronounced one syllable not in three separate ones. I have never thought of honey boo boo as having it all considering the fact that they don’t have all the materialistic things. However, you are completely right they have love and acceptance a lot of what the other “affluent” reality starts don’t have. They are on the constant search for these unrealistic standards when I would rather be loved and accepted than have more money than I know what to do with. Great post and perspective!! :Dxo
